Memorializing and commemorating the events of the Mexican-American War that lasted from 1846 until 1848, the Palo Alto Battlefield National Historic Site saw the beginning of this conflict. On May 8, 1846, soldiers from both sides converged on this site and just over 100 soldiers were killed, with a definite advantage to the United States forces and the next day the Mexican troops withdrew. In the visitor center and around the battlefield, there are exhibits and plaques that illuminate details about both this battle and the whole war. The 0.5-mile trail offers a bit of scenic enjoyment along with historical fact, making it a nice, short stop for any passers-by. It is located about 10 miles from the very southern tip of Texas, about 5 miles north of Brownsville.
Open daily 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
